HRC Home Buyer Education

In today’s information society, renters and homebuyers need access to information and someone to help them better understand the decisions that must be made to qualify for, purchase, and maintain a home.  With over 15,000 clients counseled in the past 15 years, including over 1,300 since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, certified training professionals in the Resource HRC help renters and potential homebuyers strategically navigate the challenging landscape of housing and homeownership.

Home Buyer Education Will Teach You...

  • What to look for when shopping for a house
  • Advantages of buying vs. renting
  • Creating and sticking to a budget
  • How to select a real estate agent and a lender
  • The loan application process
  • How credit affects buying power
  • Basic home maintenance and repair
  • What to expect during the closing process
  • Identifying your next steps

The Resource HRC links people with Housing Counseling and Education resources in a variety of ways:

  • Telephone Counseling provides information, intake, guidance, and referrals for customers without having to go to someone’s office for an appointment, a critical service in today’s busy marketplace.
  • Group Counseling allows multiple people to receive industry-approved, standardized pre- and post-purchase counseling to enhance knowledge and qualify for loans.  The HRC can schedule appointments over the phone and send email confirmations with directions to the course.
  • Individual Counseling is sometimes necessary to fully understand complex issues, map out a strategy to overcome hurdles to homeownership, and achieve the level of confidence required to become a homeowner.
  • Advocacy is provided in very complex and challenging situations.
